Abstract
This study aims to assess the spatial suitability of sites for the construction of new fire stations in the city of Bani Walid, Libya, using the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) and Geographic Information Systems (GIS), in order to address the limited distribution of services at present. The study relied on six spatial criteria: population density, commercial buildings, proximity to main roads, distance from existing fire stations, agricultural land, and proximity to industrial areas and petrol stations. Pairwise comparisons based on expert opinions were used to derive the weights of the criteria and test their consistency; the spatial layers were then integrated to produce a suitability map. The results showed that population density received the highest relative weight of 0.21, followed by the commercial buildings criterion with a weight of 0.17, whilst the consistency ratio of the aggregate matrix was 0.09. The study area was also classified into five suitability grades, and the results identified suitable locations that could be utilised in the planning of new fire stations. The study emphasises the importance of integrating AHP and GIS to support spatial planning, whilst highlighting the need for field verification of the proposed sites prior to their adoption.........................
